D - Dragon

(For all Ages)

YOU WILL NEED:

  • 1 litre milk or juice cartons (about 6-8)
  • Lots of coloured paper
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • PVA craft glue
  • Scissors
  • egg carton
  • Crepe paper streamers

With adult help: Pull open the tops of all the cartons, and make sure they are clean and dry. Cut away the two sides that are the most creased/folded.  Repeat for all of the boxes.

Cover the outsides of each of the carton with coloured paper or white paper, gluing and painting all to decorate.

To make the dragon's head, cut off all the top folded section of the carton. Starting at one top corner, cut a deep V into a side of the carton to about tow thirds of the way down, coming back up to the next top corner of the carton.  Cut similarly on the opposite side of the carton.  These will make the dragon's jaws.  Cover with paper and decorate with paint etc.  Eyes can be made out of egg carton cups, and either paint on eyes or stick on eyes with stickers.  Glue the cup eyes to top of head.

To connect each part to make the dragon's body, a little adult help is again needed.  Overlap the top flaps of a carton onto the bottom of another carton.  In the centre of this overlap, pierce two holes through with a skewer or scissors. Push each end of a 10cm piece of pipe cleaner through each hole to inside of carton.  Reach inside carton and twist together two ends of pipe cleaners.  Repeat this process with either side of the two cartons to connect them.

Finally stick on coloured crepe paper streamers for tail and red or orange crepe paper coming from mouth for 'fire'.
